Description
Buy or make a housing for the chartplotter that can be mounted on the pedestal guard.
Rough dimensions of pedestal guard: 12.75" center-to-center and 1.25" in diameter.
May want to give some consideration to 3d-printing an enclosure, or some mix of 3d-printing for the mount and a custom/purchaseable enclosure.

- design enclosure in a cad program
- inquire at machine shops about possibly vacuum forming from plastic, milling, or otherwise producing the part
- use simple tube or pipe clamps to attach the part (may be able to form at least one integral clamp or half-tube into the back of the part)

- RAM mount could be attached directly to pedestal guard with http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045068045050051053085/Default.aspx coupled to http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045068045049049049085045067/Default.aspx on which the lowrance mount could be placed. biggest question with this is range of motion --- is there a configuration where the plotter can go where i want it to?

i think the best approach is going to be to use the lowrance mount, attached to an angled fixture which is in turn attached to a flat piece of plywood or something, which can be u-bolted to the pedestal guard. i have a rough drawing and some measurements. need to do some math to figure out more precise dimensions. it might be nice to try out the starboard material if i can find some.
Updated by Kris Beevers about 1 year ago
note that starboard is just UV-stabilized HDPE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-density_polyethylene). i think for this particular application any old plastic lumber would work, as the sun exposure will be limited. might even be easiest just to go buy an HDPE cutting board or something.

i have a cad design of a fairly simple mounting option. bought some cheap wood paneling and blocks to make a prototype, still need to get some u-bolts and probably a miter box though.
i have also been trying to find sources of teak as that seems like maybe a nicer and more viable material than hdpe. some links:- http://singapore.panpages.com/trading-import-and-export/timber-exporters-and-importers/louis-teak-lumber-s-pte-ltd-33430.html -- louis teak lumber, shenton way

decided to try something slightly more complicated. bought some foam to carve a mold; then i'll fiberglass over it to make an enclosure. it will probably enclose the entire top part of the pedestal guard and u-bolt to that from the inside. mounting will require a 1x13" opening along the bottom of the enclosure to slide it over the guard; i'll probably use a piece of mica or something to cover that up post installation.

actually i think this is silly. why don't i just buy some nice wood and make a custom box that i can mount to the pedestal guard? somehow that possibility totally escaped me before now.

aaaand, to make that easier, why don't i just get a new pedestal guard made with an angled top, so i can just get a plain old rectangular box to enclose the plotter. made a cad drawing of the part, quotes for fabrication are in the s$100 range.

got a whole bunch of teak from bob steber. need to edge glue it to make box faces.

Chris suggests getting a dowel jig to make edge joinery easier: http://aroundtheglo.be/2011/09/28/a-lot-of-random-little-progress/#comments -- I'll look for one.

think i'm just going to give my teak to b&v's carpenter and have him do this.

removed old pedestal guard, got new one tapped/drilled in a few spots, and got it in place. drilled a hole through cabin sole beneath ptside guard foot for running wires. now need to do some soldering of wires and run them through. i may wait to finish sealing and bolting down everything until i can get a new vhf with a remote mic, and run that wire too.

new pedestal guard is installed with most wiring run; temporarily sealed with silicone to prevent cockpit draining into the bilge. just bought a remote mic for icom m422 and will run that wire when i'm back in langkawi, then can finish bolting and sealing the pedguard.
also gave teak and box dimensions to b&v's carpenter who said he could make the box with finger joints. he's going to try to make the box installable around the pedguard instead of mounted on top of it, to fully enclose the wiring.

all done running wiring and mounting the new pedguard. need to attach the table and table rest back to it but first going to await the new chartplotter box.

new chartplotter box is mostly done. need to get a hole cut in the face for the plotter, and figure out how exactly to close the box around the pedguard and fasten it in place. also will need to varnish it.
